| Should there be sex education in school? At what ages? What should or should not be taught? | |

| I think sex ed should be taught in schools. So many kids have already seen images from TV and magazines that they need to learn the correct information so that they aren't confused. I learned about sex in fourth or fifth grade from a class at school. With the way society is these days it would probably be best to teach it in Junior High or Middle School...7th grade. We had the opportunity to take sex ed in 7th grade, but the parents got the ultimate say, they sent home a permission slip or an opt out slip. I think if they teach it in a scientific way and stick to the facts and allow parents the option of not allow their child to attend, it is probably okay. | |

| I believe that from 5th grade on, children or teenagers, name it, should be taught about important aspects of sex, such as protection, the physical and emotional consequences that may come with it, as well as their body functioning. After all, what use is studying the human body systems if they don't learn about them as carefully as possible? I agree to Crystal up to a point. I don't think the parents should have any say in it, they should be handled a leafleft of the school's curriculum for that year, just b4 the begginig of the school year and then decide whether their kids should go to that school or not. That's their job to choose which places are fit for their children, but not to change the school's agenda. However, who are them to give permission to what their children will learn, if most of the time it's their lack of openness that puts their children's lives at stake? I remember when I was in 5th grade (ard 11 years old) and sex was just such an odd and distant subject, but still, our science teacher taught us all to put a condom on a banana, and not one girl who studied with me and watched that class had babies, or any guys for that matter. She didn't encouraged us to have sex, but killed our curiosity as to what a condom looked like when being used. | |

| I think sex should be explain at the age when kids hit puberty, by the parents, and then when kids hit high school, then have sex ed. I found out about sex too early and it caused me to be a bit of a sex addict. | |

| I agree with WhoreSpice. I think since kids talk about sex amongst each other so much, it's important for them to know the correct information. I believe that ideally sex education should be approached scientifically without a teacher forcing his or her opinions on children. Abstience-only sex ed, for example, just doesn't work. I went to a private school where many girls became pregnant while we were in school, and yet my health class was teaching me about abstinence! What a joke.
Personally, I think parents should start talking to their kids about sex, in a very basic way, at first, before puberty. And then communication should be kept open. I've always been really glad that my mom, from the time I was really young, was open with me about sex. We were able to discuss the physical and emotional aspects of it. She was a single mom when I was born and I think she didn't want the same thing to happen to me, so she wanted me to be smart about it. She did tell me that she, of course, as my mother, wanted me to wait until it was right for me, but she also made sure I had all the information I needed and that I could talk to her about it if I ever needed to. But a lot of people don't have parents like that, so I think it's up to schools to make sure that kids have the education that they need. | |
