| 6.6 on the Richter (sp?) scale. Happened about 7am. Pretty scary for me, earthquakes like that don't happen often in Hawaii, much less where they can be felt on Oahu.
Here's an article about it because it's almost 1 am and I'm too tired from everything to go in to detail. Of course, there are many things that the article doesn't talk about, like stores that were selling ice and food jacking up their prices, people waiting 2 hours to get gas for their cars, cops sitting in their cars instead of directing traffic, etc. There is a quote about how people in Hawaii are used to this sort of this, which is untrue. Nobody that I know, unless they had previously lived in areas where earthquakes are common, told me that it wasn't at least a little scary, because we really aren't used to them. But fortunately, I'm okay, everybody I know and love is okay, there were no reported fatalities directly linked to the earthquake. So I'm very happy and grateful that we're so fortunate. I'm still a little on edge, thinking it might happen again though, which is making it hard to sleep... =P
But yeah, here is the article: http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/16/hawaii.quake/index.html
I hope you guys all had a great weekend! Hopefully not as eventful as mine. =P

| Geez Dina..I'm just glad to hear that you're Ok! I've never experienced an earthquake as NY really dont HAVE them..but a few hurricaines have allowed me to understand that horrible sense of helplessness one gets when this things occur and its never pleasent. As far as the stores gouging customers..that should be Illegal and no one should patronize these places again after things return to normal. Its in times of crisis when folks should band together, not profiteer but eh..human nature can be disturbing. Again just glad that YOU are ok and also glad to see you posting again..we missed ya! | |

| Actually, we do have a homeless problem. But most of the homeless people here aren't even from Hawaii. Most homeless people from Hawaii are homeless due to drugs because in Hawaii, we have a very strong sense of family, even my 4th cousin twice removed, to me, is family. There's always somebody to take you in. But people sponsor homeless people from the mainland to send them to Hawaii because it's easier to be a homeless person in Hawaii than just about anywhere else in the United States. Fortunately, very few homes on my island were damaged. I'm not sure about the damage on the Big Island, which is where the earthquake came from, because I think it's still being assessed. But very few people will probably be homeless because of the earthquake. Even if homes are damaged, their families and friends will very likely take them in for however long is nessesary. | |

| I understood what you said, Cassie, and I appreciate it. And I'm sure you speak better English than any of us do Portuguese. By the way, I really do wish I spoke Portuguese. I'm 25 percent Portuguese but I don't speak a word of it. Also, Brazilians have the cutest accents. I've met some guys from Brazil, they were all gorgeous, and had those accents. Actually, there are quite a few Brazilian people living in Hawaii now. I eat at this Brazilian restaurant and I shop at this place with clothes from Brazil. And I love both. =P | |

| Aww ty Dina! =) TBH I teach English till FCE level, not sure I'm that fit for it, but it's a different method and my accent not so heavy. LOL good thing you like brazilian guys, cuz my bf is american! lol so we can change countries . I can teach you portuguese any time lol. And Stina... it depends but once my bf told me I sounded a bit germanic when speaking English, with a slight british accent LOL. Go figures! It resembles a latin accent at times, but not as strong, I hope! lol | |

And Dina, donno if u already told us but was this the first time u experienced an earthquake? I've felt little tremors when I was on the Big Island because we have an active volcano there. And about a month ago there was a 4.5 or so magnitude earthquake that was felt on Oahu. But this is definitely the biggest earthquake I've felt. About the Brazilian accent thing. The guys that I met said Brazil like "Braziiiiiew" and buildings like "biiiiiewdings". Too cute. =P - Cassie wrote:

I'm not out to find a Brazilian guy or any other guy, but I did think the guys I met from there were handsome and charming. But my boyfriend and I are from Hawaii, and in a way, I consider that to be somehow different from being really American. =P My boyfriend is 25 percent Portuguese like me. People actually say he looks quite a bit like me. Go figure. Anyway, his father's first language was Portuguese and Jame, my boyfriend, knows a couple things in Portuguese. Hawaii has a large percentage of people of Portuguese descent because many of them came here to work on the sugar, sandalwood, and pineapple plantations in the late 1800's. That's why my family came here too. And I had to ask this: do they have malassadas in Brazil? They're like sugary doughnuts without the hole in the middle, and they're kind of chewy and delicious. And how can I tell my boyfriend "I love you" in Portuguese. He'd be very impressed. =P Thanks Cassie! :-)

Thanks Cassie! :-) LOL I was definitely joking about the brazilian bf, no worries there. Nice to know so many portuguese people living there, maybe we're somehow distantly related? lol Concerning the donuts we don't call it malassadas here in Brazil. I call them donuts (LOL) and eat them almost daily during my break at work. They are sold in a grocery store nearby =P haha now I made you envy, huh? Sometimes not so chewy though a bit stale -see? revenge IS sweet lol. Oh I love is you is quite simple, you can say it in two different ways... more commonly used (and, amazingly enough, grammatically correct) is "EU TE AMO" and second form... also very common: " EU AMO VOCÊ". Hope you get him impressed !
